In recognition of 38 years of service to the children, families and early educators of our city, Children’s Council honors Renee Underwood as our 2021 Family Child Care Provider Champion.

Since opening her home-based child care business in 1983, Renee Underwood has become a cornerstone of her community, impacting the lives of hundreds of children and families, many of whom have had two generations of children come through her program.
Renee grew up in San Francisco’s Bayview neighborhood. After earning her nursing degree, she worked at San Francisco General Hospital for many years before opening Ideal Day Care in her Bayview home.
Renee has been active in Children’s Council’s early educator programs since she first became a child care provider. She has participated in countless Children’s Council workshops, and is active in the Child Adult Care Food Program, Healthy Apple nutrition program, and our Family Child Care Quality Network.
Additionally, she led the Bayview Provider Network for many years. She is a well-known leader and mentor in the Family Child Care community, regularly holding training sessions in her home for new providers, sharing teaching techniques and educational tools.
Renee holds a B.A. in Child and Adolescent Development (Young Child and Family) from San Francisco State University.
